Energy and place project
Artist Statement
For my art piece I have three pictures, the city is black and white, the bridge is black and white and color, and the cabin is color. I did that because I wanted to make a difference from the three pictures. I did also because my essay is about being in the woods, and being disconnected from all the service. That's why I put the cabin in color, to make that more a ''happy'' picture. I made the bridge black and white, also colored, more to represent that the father from the city the less social service I will have. It's representing more the journey to get to the cabin, that we drive for a while. I used also the bridge because it's a lot of quote, that when you cross the bridge everything is different. I did the city in black and white, mostly because representing something boring and sad. In my essay I tell how I like to go to the cabin, for being relax and almost taking a break from life. With the pictures I put them in a three frame as one frame. So it put more together.
I used pictures from Google, and changed them to how I wanted the. All my pictures got edit in Picmonkey. With the city light I made it black and gray. The bridge was hardest, because I only wanted the half picture color and half black and white. I got in the end, I did a ombre effect, so it looked black and white and color. The last picture I just cut it, because it was to big and to much sky. I wanted the cabin to be the main focus. Then I printed them out at Walmart. I think the pictures goes together after you have read the essay. Mostly because then you get the connection from why the city is black and white, and why the cabin is color.
I got the inspiration to this when it was the osprey week, I was Sara Price osprey weak. Her osprey week was to make trash to art, so a lot of do it you self project. Looking at what everybody was making and finding what I wanted to make online. Made me Google some inspiration, and I also saw Sara making pictures on the wood. She did some in colors and some in black and white. I liked how they were different. So I started looking at imagines on Google, and finding some imagines, and decided to make the different pictures differently based on my essay.

Taking A Break From Life
Carmen Kleppe
Abstract: I realize that it is not where I am from that makes a sense of place. It is where I have most of my memories. It's a place where I feel like I belong. I feel this is the sense of place is most spiritual, is something about the moments, that make's me feel alive. From this essay that is best capture by this quote. '' The faster it goes, the colder my chins get, it just feel like it's almost burning of cold.'' I think I feel that way also because I’m living in the moment, without any form for social media. When I have service and my phone, I feel more disconnected from what's happen now. For the environmental ethic it is more about placeness because I don't feel like we should change the nature. In my essay I talk about how it's a lot of trash, that makes the view ruined and that we people are the reason. In my essay it's capture most by this quote.+
''I think it's weird how people who work with animals, and are most in nature. Makes the nature to look worst, they put the plastic bags, to protect the reindeers from to go on the road.'' ***
Every Easter we go to the cabin up by the mountains. This Easter was no different. Driving up there, you can see how the snow is next to the road looking like sugar. It's not touched, and it looks so soft and peaceful. The snow on the trees looks like a pillow; it seems so soft and is laying on the trees perfectly, like it belongs there. The pure white snow is in such contrast to the black plastics bags tied to the fence. It just looks like it doesn’t fit in in the beautiful land, and it doesn’t. It is only there to scare the animals off the road. we can see the reindeers far away from the road, but it just looks like some black and gray dots on the snow from far away. The closer and closer you get to the little cabin the less service we have. That is nice because it allows me to get a break from life. What I mean with taking a break from life, is that I don't need to be on social media all the time. If i really really need service it is on the top of the mountain. Mostly constantly being glued to technology makes me become easily stressed, but at the cabin, I don't have anything I should do or can do there. I appreciate this disconnection from society because when I don't have cell service, I need to live in that moment.
Even as I sit in my classroom in Durango, Colorado, I can see the cabin now. It's white just like the snow. I can see the mountains behind the cabin, they are covered with snow. Up there it doesn’t seem so peaceful, I can see different marks, of skis. I dreaded to get out of the car, into the cold, I open the door and looking at the snow. Realizing when I will step out of the snow I will have snow up to my knees. When I finally step out of the car, as expected I have snow up to my knees. I can just feel have the snow is melting in my shoes and I start to freeze. It was just hurrying taking all my stuff up on too the house. Put the bag on the floor and find may gray wool socks and stand to the fireplace. The fireplace has a window, and seeing the fire being alive. It's very beautiful, how it dance almost.
Standing there and feel the heat, and just looking at the fire, my feet gets warmer and warmer. The fire is one of the most beautiful things in the world, is so peaceful and magical. After a while, when it's getting hotter, I just sit in my favorite chair with a cup of hot chocolate. Still just looking at the fire. It's so quiet and I just hear the fire making noises. I could do that forever. When I see outside the window, the stars are out and the north light. Then it's just taking a lot of clothes on, I have to take a lot of warm clothes. A scarf around my neck and covered my mouth, and winter jacket and pants. I look at the mirror and comes to the conclusion that I look like a ''Oompa Loompa'' from Charlie chocolate fabric. When I go outside, I can feel the cold hitting my face. The little space between my scarf and glasses. It's totally dark except from the north light. When I start the snow mobile, the sound it get when it starts, makes me exciting. The smell to even though is smells like gas, it is associate with a lot of fun memories.
When I start to hit the gas, is almost like I get an adrenaline rush. I make it over a field, with a lot of humps. When you drive over the humps, is almost like you are flying. A decide to go to my favorite place, on the river. Driving on the ice right there, makes me feel alive. Just right there at that moment the only thing that matters, is pushing in the gas and go for it. It's like all my problems go away, just for that moment. The faster it goes, the colder my chins get, it just feel like it's almost burning of cold. I stop for a while, take off my gloves, press the warm hands on my cold chin. It is almost burning, but it feels nice. When my hands get cold again, I put my gloves on. I decide to just lay down on the snowmobile and look up at the sky. Seeing all the beautiful color in the sky, and see how the light is being alive. Since I'm laying near the ice, it is even colder than usual.
After a while it started to get cold, and I didn't want to go. My hands was very cold, and I couldn’t feel my fingers. I sat up looked at the stirring wheel, and decided it was time to drive home. Driving home is dark, all you can see is the light from the snowmobile. Since the light is only shinning is like the snow is sparkling almost like glitter. As I drive the same way. I can see the light at the cabin from a distant. It's seems so peaceful up there. Just the cabin, with the northern lights dancing behind it.
Stepping in to the house, I just feel the heat blowing in my face. It almost hurts, and that's when I realize that my chin had to be cold as stone. I heard a familiar voice, and realize it has to be our nearest cabin neighborhood. He was not fare away, just a few miles. Taking of my winter jacket and pants, I hear my mom ask, ''Did you have nice drive?''
''Yes, I had.'' I answer.
Coming in to the living room, I see Rodger (our neighbor) sitting there at the kitchen table. He seems very upset almost, and I could sense that he and my parents were talking about his job. Rodger works with the reindeers.
For someone who doesn’t live in this area, I should probably explain. People here make money with their reindeers. Every year, they separate the herd between those who are going to live and thosewho are going to the butcher. For the reindeers that live, it is the owners’ responsibility to make sure they have enough food, and that they travel safely. With traveling I mean they have a place in the summer at which they can stay . When it get's colder, they have an instinct to go to the winter pasture.
As I take off my boots and shed my jacket, Rodger talks about how he can not continue working with reindeers, mostly because he does not have enough food for all of reindeers. A new law recently passed that requires everybody with reindeers to butcher half of their herd. Just seeing his face made me upset; he looked up at ceiling, because he didn’t want to cry. This problem had happened because it nature has change, and also because there are too many reindeers. It's weird how something so beautiful can't live, but the fabulous trash that looks awful. I think it's weird how people who work with animals, and are most in nature. Makes the nature to look worst, they put the plastic bags, to protect the reindeers from to go on the road. Even though is ruining the nature. It's ruining the nature because, when they fall of the fence they don't get picked up, and all lot of animals eat them, so they get killed. It's very ironic if you ask me.
Rodger’s story made me think, as we were driving home, what if I could no longer do the things I loved?. What if every time I see trash and neglect to pick it up, it will cost my job? I think we are all passionate about something. We are lucky if we get to work with that. We all have some responsibility to protect the nature in some way. I looked out the window and see the reindeer’s again, it could be one of the last time they are there. It's lighter outside, which also means that I can see the ''art'', meaning the trash bags on the fence. As we came closer and closer to town, with more cell service, my phone started making news. I had new messages, it was like 10 message, 2 calls, none of them was very important. It was more if I wanted to hang out. . That's when I know that I have to return to society.
Project Reflection
For this project we had to write an essay about our sense place and our environmental ethic from that place. To find out how to write a essay about that, we read different readings. The different readings had different connection to a place, and different environmental ethic. Also reading those, helped us understand the Grand Style writing. Grand Style is when describe a place very descriptive and you can picture it. We also did some journals, in the journals we wrote different things, like nature writing, what our opinion of something was and made us prepared for essay.
I think this essay was very hard to write. Mostly because I never thought of my sense of place. For me the sense of place is where I have the best memories. Also writing the essay when I found my sense of place was difficult. Mostly because I did know how to start, and also writing in the grand style. It was also hard do choose the environmental ethic, or find it. The readings was hard to, most because they used big words, and a lot of details. Since they were writing in Grand style.
I like my essay the best, I didn’t think it turned as good. I just liked it because it was a new style writing, and I think I understood it. I also liked how my final draft of my essay. Mostly because I felt like it came together very well. Also that I wrote in that style of writing. I thought it was very hard writing in that style.
For my art piece I have three pictures, the city is black and white, the bridge is black and white and color, and the cabin is color. Happiness and Meaning Project
This project we read a lot about how people lived a different life, and how people find meaning in life. Also what happiness means to diffrent people. We listen to diffrent TED talks, to hear about diffrent people perspective about meaning to life. Also what happiness means to them. I liked to listen to the TED talks because you hear a lot of perspective and you start to think differently. We had to answer some essential questions to wrap up the project.
The purpose of some ones existences can be different for everybody, it really depend of what you believe. To find out the purpose of you existences, I think you need to find out what's your meaning in life. What make do you drive for. ''The stranger'' is a book about that, in one way. The main character talks about his existence at the end of the book. ''And I felt ready to live again too. As if that blind rage had washed me clean.'' page 122. He felt alive and that he does existence. He hadn’t felt that way in a long time. Also at the last page in the book it said ''I felt that I had been happy and that I was happy again. For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate. '' He realize that to exists you need to have relationships, it doesn’t matter if it's good or bad. You need to belong some were, have a meaning for your life.
what make people happy is when you are doing what you love, when you are in your flow. Also when you get recognize by doing some thing for others. In the movie ''Happy'' you see what make different people happy. One of the most memorable scene in the movie is when the man from Brazil who loves to surfs. Talk about how he doesn’t have everything he need, and don't have a lot of money, but he is still happy because he is doing what he love. I think that you will be happier when you accept your life. That your life is not perfect but you have a good life. The lady who got run over, she crushed her face. But she is happy now, because she accepted how she is.
Some people will say living a meaningful life, you need to feel like what you are doing is meaningful. Also that you feel happy doing it. I think having goals helps you live a meaningful life, is something that you drive for. The poem ''The lesson of the moth'', the Mehitabel and Archy how different meanings of their life. ''it is better to be happy for a moment and be burned up with beauty than to live a long time.'' page 3. The Moth think that if you live a short life, but follow your passion, that's a meaningful life. The way Moth is living his life seams fun, but most people would rather live a very long life with some ups and downs. ''I do not agree with him myself I would rather have half the happiness and twice the longevity. But at the same time I there was something I wanted as badly as he wanted to fry himself.'' Archy means that you can life your meaningful, even though you don't have a good time always. If you have some low points in you life, you will appreciate the good times more.
I think that literature can give you ideas about how you define meaning of life and happiness. The stranger we read in the beginning of the project. That book made me think about my life. Just because I didn't life the book, and he had such a boring life, and that made me think how I wanted to live my life. For me the TED talks had a bigger influence, just because hearing somebody talk about happiness or meaning of life, made me think a lot more about it. i feel hearing the TED talks was more persuade.

This project made me think about how I define happiness in my life. I think happiness is a present feeling. That to be truly happy you need to accept life as it is. Also watching the movie ''Happy'' made my think about life. Watching that movie and see how diffrent people find happiness. The surfer in Brasil, didn't how much, but he was happy because he did what he loved. Also about the women who got ran over by the truck and her face was crush. She became happy because she accepted who she are. I also think that have a meaning in your life, to be happy. If you don't have meaning in you life, I feel like you are stuck some where. If you have a drive or a goal, you work towards something. That is some of the things this project made me think about.
Some questions that this project made me think about:
Do I need a good job to be happy about my life?
I am truly happy?
How would I react if my life totally changed?
What makes me happy?
Seminar Prep For Strangers
Part 1
I think the author is trying to make a point that you need to have a meaning to life, because you need something to drive for. If you don't live your life with being happy, and have a meaning, you become in one way careless. Things and people don't matter any more, because you don't see the point in what you are doing, and who you spend time with. I think that is a way the the author showed how to not have a meaning in life in the book.
What I have learn from the book, at the very last pages he said that he was happy. I think he said he was happy because he felt like he belonged somewhere. When you feel like you have a place that you feel comfortable. I think that make you a happier person, where you feel like you can be yourself. Also that he was no longer a person looking at the society, being a outcast. That when you accepted one way who you are, you become more happy. That's also about belong somewhere. He was also starting to care, because he did realize that what he do in life is the meaning of life. That made me think, because you can choose to be happy and accept life, or you can be unhappy and be bother by the little things. Mersault became happy in the end, because he realize the meaning of life.
Part 3.
Seminar questions 3:
I think he consider number 1. Number 1 is about that death is pointless, so suicide is pointless. I think he consider that, by the way he thinks. “hope meant being cut down on some street corner, as you ran like a mad, by a randome bullet.” He is really thinking about death, and how that would be better. Also like the whole passanger, he is thinking how people die. How you can read their stories in the newspaper. In the end of the passage, he concluded with that suicide is pointless. Because he will still be stuck in something.
Seminar Prep Happiness And Meaning
Part 1.
2. what make people happy is when you are doing what you love, when you are in your flow.

Happiness and its a surprises by Nancy Etcoff
- 5 positives to 1 negative ( five positives way up 1 negative)
-People hate to lose more than they love to win
-Happiness and unhappiness are not endpoint of a single continuum
-Happiness is not a simple the absence of misery a fact, intuitively obvious to anyone who has ever felt happy.
-Most people are above average in happiness
-people are happiest when they are in the flow, with other people
The talk was mostly have we ''see'' happiness, how studies showed when are we most happy. Also that happiness don't always way up, Nancy said that we focused more on the negative things. So every 5 positives things in life way up for the one negative one. But also we are the happiest when we forget about or selfs. When we do somethings we love, or are with other people. Most people in the world are happy, but not because we haven't felt bad times. Just because we have something or someone in our life that makes us happy.
Do you think that for every 5 positive thing in life it way up for 1 negative thing in life?
The Amazing Adventures of Phoenix Jones' (Literary Analysis Essay)
Carmen Kleppe
We all drive for being happy and successful, to find the meaning of life. When do we know when we are successful? Do the things we do in life, make our life meaningful? In ''The Amazing Adventures of Phoenix Jones'' by Jon Ronson. The superheros are living every little kids dream, to become a superhero and to fight crime. In the novel he talks about how normal people make meaning in their life by becoming superheros and protect their city. Also what drives them as individuals to become superheros. Jon Ronson means to have a meaningful life you need something to drive for, and feeling that you have achieved something.
In ''The Amazing Adventures of Phoenix Jones'' the author Jon Ronson talks about how being a superheros brings meaning to their life. That they can create an identity and be someone they wanted be. ''The person under the mask really hasn't accomplished much, says Urban Avenger. But as a superhero I can go out and do something. I can feel like a better person. Kind of'''. (page 249) Urban Avenger is talking about that when he is a superhero he feels impotent, because he does something for someone else. He feel successful because he does what he wants to do with his life, and what he is meaningful for him.
In the novel the author talks about how they have some similar goals and morals, but also that they all have different story and they have different things that make them drive. ''May RLSHs (real-life superheros) were raised learning morality from comic books and have applied that their everyday lives. It's our natural way of reaction to the challenges of the day.'' (p. 244) The superheros have all things that make them drive for susses or to be come a better superhero, but they have the same morals and goals. Because they all have been raised up on comics book. The goal is to make the city are safer.
The ted talk ''Is Having Grit The Key To Success'' by Angela Duck, she talks about how we become successful, and most people who are successful have something in common. She has done a lot of study’s on the different people, all from people at military camps to spelling bees, to high school students. After she has done her observation, she has tried to guess who will be their to the end, who would win the competition, or graduate. She found out the most successful people are the people with grit. A person who is grit have a strength of will and determination. To achieve something in life and to be successful you need to have determination and will to take it to the next level.
''Grit is sticking with your future, day in and day out, not for a week and month but for years''. (Angela Duck) in 'The Amazing Adventures of Phoenix Jones'' you see that some of the superheros have that. Phoenix Jones are one of them. He says ''I dress as a superhero and fight crime because I like to.'' he says The dress up as cops and don't fight crime because they like to.'' Phoenix Jones finds meaning in what he do when he is a superheros. He has one goal and that is to make the city a safe place.
We all Mercer success differently and for some people to have a meaningful life you need to be successful. In ''The Amazing Adventures of Phoenix Jones'' you see that they make identity, to become some one else, for to rescue the world. Because the society has already judge them and they feel more comfortable putting a mask on. Because of them archiving some thing in their life, and make a difference in the world. They feel more successful. When they feel like they are actually helping people, lot of them feel like that's the meaning of life. They have accomplish something, and they have made their goals. To make the city a better place.

Happiness and Meaning: Personal Philosophy Project Credo and Proposal
Part 1.
My purpose of my existence to be honest I don't know. We all play a role in this life, even it's not a big role. I'm a daughter, a friend, a student. I would not say that the labels define or purpose of my existence, but they say something about the role you have in this world. I think also what your passion is and how much time you spend on you passion tells you what's your purpose of your existence. I feel like labels also helps you to find out who you are, and what you purpose of your existence are. For me also it's realizing who you are, what role you play in the community. I feel like my purpose of existence is to be the best person I can be.
For me happiness is when you accept your life, and stop compering your life with anyone else. Also I believe that is good to have bad days, because then you know you been happy and you get reminded of all the good things in life. Happiness for me is also be surrounded by people who make you happy. Also for me is when I can do things that interest me. I believe also that happiness is a present feeling, that you can't ''find'' happiness. It's a feeling that come and go. I also thing that we should feel like we are living the life, taking risk and be more adventures. I feel more we live and explore, the better our life will be. Also then you find out what your passion is, and what makes you more happy.
The definition of meaning in life for me is do something that make you happy. If you feel that you are successful and happy. I don't believe that having the perfect life makes you happy or bring meaning to life, maybe you have it all but you will get bored of it. I believe we all want more then that we have, we have goals we want to achieve. For me to live a meaningful life is doing something you want to do and have goals. Because if you will live a meaningful life you need to live your life.
Part 2.
I chose the quote ''The sky has never been the limit. We are our own limits. It's then about breaking our personal limits and outgrowing ourselves to live our best live''. I feel like it's something I believe in for having a meaningful life, the more you explore and step out of your comfort sone, the happier you be. Maybe not at the time you explore the world, but after you have done it, and can look back and be proud of your selves for doing it. Also what you make out of life is your choice.
Part 3.
My personal philosophy is in order to live a meaningful life is being happy, and feel like you are living. I think my art piece will be a picture. A poem or a collage. https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/imagesq=tbn:ANd9GcRrDkOuOk98UMdo0Bcdze_J3iRpF7L2ott6wo9SS8uIllkEFFq7 this is one example how it could look like for my collage. For my poem I think I would like it to be digital like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_fK6gWTT0c. I will the art piece to represent my philosophy but also my essay I wrote for this project. I think the impression I want the audience to get it that is a ''whole'' feeling. That my essay, and my art piece and my personal philosophy will match in one way. That you can see that they are in the same project. I thinking of making a collage with some small picture to make it to a bigger pictures. But I’m not sure if it will happened or not. I have to figure out how to do it. If I do a poem I feel like that could be easier, but I’m not sure. Sometimes writing poem is easy, and some times not. I think the art piece will be the hardest part, more because I’m not sure what I want to do, and also how I should do it. I need some pictures printed out, and a canvas. I don't think that this art piece will take long time, its just finding out how to do it. If I do a poem I feel like I don't need a lot things then.

I think the author is trying to make a point that you need to have a meaning to life, because you need something to drive for. If you don't live your life with being happy, and have a meaning, you become in one way careless.
